Periodontal disease is the medical term for gum disease. It includes gum disease, including gingivitis, which is a mild form of the disease, but most often refers to the more severe second stage of gum disease, periodontitis.<\/p>\n

This type of disease is among the ten most common diseases affecting humans and the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, so it is important to be familiar with this condition and how it can develop.<\/p>\n

Types of Periodontal Disease<\/span><\/span><\/h3><\/header>

Depending on how long the problem has been neglected and the patient's level of hygiene, periodontal disease progresses to varying degrees. It is important to note that even with the best innovations in dentistry, patient cooperation is crucial to the effectiveness of periodontal treatment.<\/p>\n

Superficial inflammation of the gums manifested as redness and swelling, mild soreness, or in a more advanced stage \u2013 more severe pain. In some cases, a symptom of gingivitis can be a strong increase in the size of the gums, causing difficulty in eating. The main causes of bleeding gums are:<\/p>\n

  • Bacterial plaque and untreated tartar<\/li>\n
  • Poor oral hygiene<\/li>\n
  • Brushing with a hard toothbrush, injuring the gums<\/li>\n
  • Abuse with alcohol and nicotine products<\/li>\n
  • Reduced immune defense<\/li>\n
  • Hormonal problems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    Periodontitis<\/span><\/span><\/h4><\/header>

    Periodontitis is characterized by bacterial infection of the specialized tissues, ligaments, and bones that surround and support the teeth. Periodontitis is the second most severe stage of gum disease. It requires medical and periodontal treatment and, if left untreated, can lead to permanent tooth loss. Periodontitis can occur as a complication of untreated gingivitis and worsens if plaque is not removed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    • Teeth exposure (tooth mobility)<\/li>\n

      Treatment, Therapy and Prevention<\/span><\/span><\/h3><\/header>

      There are many different forms of periodontal treatment. These may include:<\/p>\n

      • Improved oral care<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 if you have symptoms of gingivitis, you may need to be instructed on how to brush your teeth properly to remove plaque more effectively, or how to use dental floss and interdental brushes to clean hard-to-reach areas.<\/li>\n
      • Professional cleaning<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 also called scaling and polishing, which involves scraping away plaque and tartar buildup and then polishing the teeth to prevent them from reoccurring.<\/li>\n
      • Antibiotics<\/strong> \u2013 are prescribed very rarely, to treat isolated cases of infection that have not responded to other non-surgical forms of treatment.<\/li>\n
      • Gum surgery<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 several types of gum surgery are used for periodontal treatment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
