Root Canal Treatment (Endodontics)

Root canal treatment or endodontic treatment is the correct term for the procedure that treats the tooth nerve. Endodontics is a specialty in dentistry that deals with the dental pulp and the tissues around the root canal of the tooth. Root canal treatment can be performed by both a general dentist and a specialist endodontist.

During root canal treatment, the dental pulp is removed, and all the canals of the tooth and the coronal pulp cavity are filled and sealed. A well-conducted and timely root canal treatment preserves the tooth and its integrity, as well as relieves the symptoms of inflammation that lead to discomfort or pain in the patient.

What leads to root canal treatment?

The processes and hypotheses leading to the need for root canal treatment are not one or two at all. There are many cases in which the dentist will determine that you need such therapy. We will summarize them so that you can imagine what type of treatment we are talking about and, above all so that you understand its purpose.

Cases in which root canal treatment is necessary:

  • Deep caries, including the lack of adequate or any treatment for it over a long time. As a result of such inaction, the pulp becomes inflamed. It should be clear that it becomes severely inflamed as a result of the progressively increasing access of microbes, enzymes and toxins to it, that is, due to the enlargement of the caries.
  • In periodontitis. Unlike the above case, this is a case of total destruction of the pulp. It is reached by the same route, and the time when measures are not taken is relatively longer. The passage of the infection from the canals of the tooth into the bone is called periodontitis - inflammation around the tip of the root. In practice, as the process progresses, a large amount of pus collects in the bone, and in more severe cases it even leaks into the oral cavity, which causes bad breath and a bad taste in the mouth.
  • Root canal treatment may be necessary even in cases of a dead tooth. The need for therapy is established on an X-ray, or because, although it is dead, pain begins to be felt in the area of this tooth, especially when in contact.
  • It is also possible that a severe trauma can lead to a fracture of the tooth with nerve involvement. In these cases, root canal treatment is usually also performed. But in many cases, the need for this treatment occurs some time after the trauma.
  • When a tooth is filed for a crown or bridge, the nerve is often affected. This leads to the process of necrotization of the dental pulp, respectively, the need for root canal treatment. The good news is that it can be completely successful and the tooth can "survive" despite everything.

What are the processes of root canal treatment?

Although it sounds complicated and scary, we must reassure you that root canal treatment should not cause you to panic. However, we will completely agree that this is a complex treatment. Complex for the dentists themselves. There is no pain for the patient, since root canal treatment is necessarily carried out with local anesthesia.

The complexity of the therapy comes from the mandatory need for the tooth root canal to be cleaned and filled perfectly, precisely, without the presence of moisture during the filling. This is possible not only with professional skills and attention, but also with the use of a special insulating material. We are talking about a rubber dam. It is placed to protect the canals from the penetration of saliva, which, as we know, is full of bacteria. On the other hand, the rubber dam protects the gums from the antiseptic used for rinsing. Another important element in precise root canal treatment is the use of an electronic apex locator device. Its function is to "measure" the length to which the root canal must be processed and filled.

After the procedure, an X-ray is mandatory. It is a guide for the quality of filling the canals.

At Hills Dent Center we perform root canal treatment using anesthesia, a rubber dam, an apex locator and X-ray. Count on us for a professional approach and individual attention. Make an appointment for a consultation today!
