First visit to the dentist

When does child dental care begin?

Child dental care begins with the appearance of the first tooth. According to the recommendations of the American and European Academies of Pediatric Dentistry, the first visit to a pediatric dentist should take place when the first tooth erupts or by the child's first birthday.

During your first visit to our office, we will provide you with valuable information and guidance:

  • We will teach you how to care for your child's oral hygiene properly and turn brushing your teeth into fun.
  • We will talk about the role of nutrition in the health of children's teeth and offer you individual preventive measures.
  • We will prepare you for what you can expect at the different stages of your child's development.
  • We will give you advice on how to respond to injuries or emergencies, as well as answer common questions such as:
    • How long should I breastfeed my baby?
    • Are juices harmful to teeth?
    • Why doesn't my child have any teeth yet?
    • What is causing my child's tooth decay?

An early visit to a pediatric dentist not only reduces the risk of stress during future treatments but also creates a foundation for building healthy and happy children's smiles!

How to prepare your child for his first check-up?

  • Stay positive: Share with your child the benefits of dental care and talk enthusiastically about visiting the dentist. Answer their questions about dental health honestly.
  • Play and Fun: Read books about teeth together or download a mobile game app that introduces the dental environment in a fun way. Take his favorite toy along for the ride and let the review begin with a “review” of the toy in a play situation.
  • Avoid negativity:
    • Don't tell scary stories about dental checkups.
    • Don't use the dentist's visit as a threat or punishment.
    • Avoid using words like "needle," "pain," or "fear."
  • Speak positively: Instead of saying “It’s not scary” or “it doesn’t hurt,” use phrases like “it’s fun,” “it tickles,” or “you’ll feel calm.” This builds a positive attitude in the child.
  • The first visit: Make sure your child's first visit to the dentist is a preventive check-up, with no associated treatment. This will help establish a positive attitude towards dental care. With the right approach, a visit to the dentist can become a pleasant and carefree experience for your child!

Sealants

Sealants are dental materials that protect newly erupted teeth in children from caries. They can be placed on teeth with a chewing surface – molars and premolars. They are most often placed on newly erupted permanent teeth up to 2 years after the tooth erupts, but they can also be placed on temporary chewing teeth. They create a barrier against factors that cause caries and thus protect newly erupted teeth.

What is the process?

Sealants are dental materials that are placed on the deep pits and grooves of the chewing teeth, forming a protective layer. It is very thin, smooth, and hard.

Why do we need it?
Permanent teeth erupt with lower enamel strength. In two years, it matures and reaches its maximum hardness. The grooves of the chewing teeth are deep and narrow, and it is impossible to remove the plaque accumulated in them with a brush and toothpaste. The bacteria in the plaque form acids that cause cavities. Sealants protect your child's teeth from cavities.

How are sealants applied?
The tooth is cleaned with a special brush. It is then pre-prepared with a dental gel for a few seconds. The tooth is washed with water and dried. The sealant is placed with a thin syringe on the pits and fissures (dents). It is then hardened under the action of light from the dental lamp. The formation of the protective shield takes about a minute.

Treatment of caries, pulpitis and periodontitis

Dental caries in childhood have its own specifics. In primary and newly erupted permanent teeth, caries progresses much faster and more complicatedly than in adults. Early childhood caries is relatively common and every good pediatric dentist knows its peculiarities. Dr. Denitsa Stoyanova is trained in the treatment of caries in children and uses special materials of the highest class in the restoration of these teeth, even if they are severely damaged baby teeth of very young children.

Toothache, accompanied or not by facial swelling, is a serious condition that is often difficult for children to accept, but requires urgent treatment. The symptoms and treatment in these situations are specific to primary and newly erupted permanent teeth.

Local anesthesia – what do we need to know?

Dental procedures can sometimes be associated with discomfort. We strive to make every visit a positive experience for the child by providing painless diagnostics and treatment using local anesthesia when necessary.

Should we worry about local anesthesia?

  • We explain the child's manipulation in appropriate, non-threatening terms – for example, "the tooth drinks sleeping juice" or "a mosquito bites."
  • After anesthesia is administered, it is important to monitor the child to avoid biting the lips or cheeks. Food and hot/cold drinks are avoided for up to 3 hours.

When used correctly, local anesthesia is safe and has a very low risk of side effects. Self-inflicted injuries are possible, but serious reactions are extremely rare. This makes the procedure safe for children and adolescents.

Temporary tooth crowns

A crown is a covering that covers and protects the entire surface of a tooth, restoring its function and appearance. It strengthens the tooth while protecting the existing structure and providing a longer-lasting result compared to a filling or other restorative methods.

Temporary crowns are pre-fabricated in various sizes and shapes to fit children's chewing teeth. They require minimal tooth preparation and are placed in just one visit.
